Job search fatigue can be somewhat confusing and is often disguised as frustration with a lack of results. When you usually think of fatigue, images of physical labor and exhaustion come to mind but in a job search fatigue comes from an inner dialogue mixed with worry.

It’s easy to view job searching as just sitting behind the computer screen sending out dozens of resumes and making networking calls, but one of the most vulnerable aspects to a job search is the mental energy it takes to keep an active search moving forward when your efforts seem to make less progress than expected.

When you grow weary from searching for employment you often lose the ability to keep an adaptable attitude and mismanage where you spend your time. Don’t feel guilty if you find yourself losing momentum, the majority of job seekers suffer from fatigue at some point.

Falling into a job search routine where you only rely on a couple of methods is how one candidate felt when all of her efforts were going nowhere. After a few months of the same routine she was about to get ready to give up her search when she decided to write down the percentage of time spent every day searching.

She discovered the source of her fatigue — at least 65 percent of her time was spent on applying for jobs, 15 percent was following up with recruiters, 15 percent was networking, and the last remaining 5 percent was spent on writing letters and emails.

The majority of her time produced the smallest results and yet this was her daily routine, every morning started the same way answering ads, reviewing job search boards and replying to emails. She believed wholeheartedly that her way of searching would generate offers. Applying for jobs and waiting for responses eventually kept her stuck in a loop.

While there is little physical labor involved in searching for employment, it’s the mental stress of waiting that leads to feelings of exhaustion. With fatigue in mind, it’s worth mentioning to check for depression. If you are to the point where the lack of energy is keeping you stuck and preventing you from enjoying daily activities then it could be a sign that you are getting depressed. Depression is a serious issue and needs to be addressed by a professional health care provider.

In the job seeker’s case above, it was matter of self-awareness and changing her search strategy. Once she discovered where she was spending her time, her attitude changed toward a routine that kept her stuck.

Listed are some ways that can generate momentum and help you overcome job search fatigue.

  • Change your attitude, what worked in the past may not work in today’s job market. Let go of routines that prevent you from landing a good job, such as staying in a rut applying for jobs every day with little results. Be open to experiencing new activities like inviting someone out for coffee, attending a workshop or volunteering.
  • Increase your interactions with others. Fatigue can happen when no one is around and can be a sign you’re not meeting people. That’s why job search groups are so effective it’s the power of the group that generates brainstorming energy. If you are uncomfortable with meeting others, start slow by attending at least one event a week, bring a friend if possible. Make a commitment to attend and you are least likely to back out.
  • Broaden your job search techniques, the hidden job market is alive and well with opportunities and exists when you explore industries and the needs of the marketplace rather than waiting for jobs to come to you via job postings. Look beyond titles and focus on using your transferable skills in areas where there is demand in the marketplace.

Often it’s not your lack of skills or the job market that prevents you from landing a good job — it’s where you spend your efforts and your beliefs toward finding opportunity.

Have you dealt with job search fatigue? If so what did you find most helpful in renewing your energy?
