The Ear of the Huguenots

Huelgas Ensemble

(Deutsche Harmonia Mundi)

Being a composer could be a dangerous business during the Reformation. The first composer on this disc, Claude Goudimel, died in the St Bartholomew’s Day massacres in Lyons in 1572, the year when Catholic violence led to the deaths of up to 30,000 Protestants in France. This varied programme devised by the excellent Huelgas Ensemble and its director, Paul van Nevel, takes in Calvinist Protestant psalm settings and also secular music of the Huguenots’ circle. An interlude set in Rome imagines Catholic musical celebrations at the news of the massacre.
