Being invited for a job interview is the No. 1 goal of every job candidate who diligently searches for a good opportunity. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and time to find the right position and when that happens you want to be your best.

We all know that preparing for an interview makes you a stronger candidate, no doubt those who are prepared will stand out from the crowd yet there are some signs you need to pay attention too before you meet with an interviewer.

Here are some signs that indicate you might not be ready for an interview:

Not having your act together: Your behavior during an interview, pre-and post-interview interactions are all reflections of how you might conduct yourself on the job. An interviewer relies on observations of your verbal and non-verbal behavior and will generate a perception of how you will act as an employee. “Having your act together” implies a professional image and approach to tasks. For example, what you wear to interview as well as how you present yourself will say a lot about your style and organization.

Letting stress get to you: Having a case of the interview jitters is normal, and in some cases, will give you an extra boost of energy but when stress gets to you it can send a perception that you are unprepared. Use stress to your advantage rather than letting it control the image you want to convey. Stress tends to effect three major areas during an interview: the ability to listen to questions, difficulty in concentrating and communication that leads to “rambling”. If you find yourself having problems in these areas it can be a sign that stress is getting to you.

Showing no enthusiasm: A job candidate once had trouble receiving job offers and I think the main reason was his lack of emotion. He had trouble “smiling”. If you don’t radiate enthusiasm and energy, the interviewer is not likely to take much interest in you. In other words, displaying a lack of interest can be a major barrier in going forward with the hiring process.

Not asking questions: If you sit in an interview stone-faced and do not ask questions, you automatically convey a low sense of interest and enthusiasm for the job. Remember you are talking with a potential employer and interviewing is a two way street. Asking questions shows the interviewer that you have prepared ahead of time and want to know more about the job. Building rapport through questions and answers reflects your communication style.

Not following up and following through: Following up is part of the interview process that leads to the next steps. The key is to follow up and follow through in a timely manner without appearing needy. Hiring decision makers like interested candidates who demonstrate a desire for the position in a confident way. A job fair recruiter once told me the candidates who follow up with him are the ones that he counts as most interested in the job.

Not being prepared or over-practice: Waiting till the last minute to rehearse your interviewing skills is much like trying to “wing it” during the interview. Interviewing takes practice and doesn’t come naturally to most job candidates because you are talking about your skills and results you produce. To be a successful interviewer, you must prepare what you are going to say and how you’ll conduct yourself. When you over-practice, such as trying to memorize your answers, it can send a disingenuous perception.

Paying attention to signs can make you a much stronger candidate because it heightens your awareness and gives you an extra dose of confidence going into an interview. Be yourself but with practice on how to answer questions and meet the employer’s needs.
