Q: My company just went through a merger and I thought everything would work out well until, one by one, my roles began to change as well as my colleagues.  Now I am finding that my stress level is at an all-time high just waiting to hear news that my department will be eliminated.  What suggestions do you have for coping with stress?

A: In today’s marketplace with the economy being up one day and down the next, it’s not that surprising that mergers are on the increase as well as the stress in the workplace, leaving employees uncertain of what will happen next.

The good news is that you can master work stress by focusing on managing the uncertainties and you can start with the first line of defense — your thoughts.

Here are some simple ways to increase your coping skills during times of change and learn from the experience rather than allowing stress to control you.

  • Attitude plays a huge role in determining how you look at change in general and helps you adapt to unexpected plans.  Keep an open mind toward change rather than fight it. The more you build up a barrier of trying to keep things the way they were in the past the harder it is to accept change.
  • Focus on what your role is right now and what you can do to make it more efficient. What does the new company need right now? How can you help them reach their immediate goals?
  • Learn from this experience to plan for the future. Observe where the company is moving and stay in touch with other colleagues from different departments.
  • Check the amount of time you are spending on worrying instead of doing the tasks at hand. Worrying burns up mental energy that could be spent elsewhere such as planning for things to work out in a positive way.
  • Avoid getting caught up in the negativity of labeling change as being “bad”. Often change brings new opportunities for you, if you stay flexible. The mental act of waiting to hear bad news adds to the stress levels. What would happen if you take each day at a time, expecting that things will work out for the best?
  • Take control of your time by keeping a to-do list and prioritize them. Time management is important especially when changes are taking place all around you. Changes can often lead to a sense of feeling out of control with your career. Taking charge of things you can control helps reduce your stress level.
  • Keep your sense of humor going strong.  Laughter helps reduce stress levels and keeps things in perspective. Research indicates that laughing reduces tension and increases a sense of well-being.
  • Being active physically helps with stress, such as walking or running. If you are out of shape, as with any exercise routine it’s a good idea to consult your Physician to make sure all is well before you engage in strenuous exercise.
  • Make it a goal to help someone every day. The act of giving brings perspective to your situation and gets your mind of what “might” happen. Receiving positive feedback from those that need help reinforces good feelings instead of dreading the bad ones.
