Landing an interview is what a job search is all about. It’s the moment you meet with your next potential employer and even though interviewing may seem second nature to you by now, you still need to prepare ahead of time.

A job candidate was concerned about her interviewing skills and recently asked a question pertaining to the next steps. She, like many others, struggle with marketing their skills and are often doubtful of their abilities to present a strong perception during the interview.

Q: Every time I go on an interview I feel like I could have done a better job of selling myself. What suggestions do you have to improve my chances of getting a second interview?

A: My suggestion is to start asking questions upfront before you meet with the interviewer to increase your chances of getting a second interview and to gather valuable insight of the employer’s needs. When you prepare ahead of time it gives you confidence and helps you focus on building rapport and developing good chemistry with the employer.

Going on an interview with a lack of knowledge of specific skills the employer needs is setting yourself up for disappointment and prevents you from making the best impression with the employer. It is a self-defeating action that can be eliminated by asking a few questions.

Selling your skill sets to an employer without knowing the employer’s needs is like throwing darts blindfolded: It creates unnecessary anxiety.

Consider asking these three questions before your first meeting and the way you approach an interview will be more effective.

• Ask for a job description, you already may have printed one from the Internet if the job was posted online, but it helps to ask if they have a more detailed description to send you. Once you received the description, highlight key areas and match your skills and expertise accordingly. The job description is a road map to assist you in asking questions during the interview.

• Ask about the job interview plan. Who will you be meeting? Will this be a group interview? How much time should you block out? If you have the opportunity, ask about the background of the person who will be interviewing you. Acquiring knowledge about the interviewer’s background will help you establish rapport. Knowing how long the meeting may last will help determine if this is a screening interview, where each candidate is on a timeline. Interviews lasting 45 minutes to an hour usually are screening interviews; if you are a strong candidate then others will follow.

• Ask about specific areas of interest in your background that are important for the employer. Specific “areas of interest” questions help define the employer’s needs. This questions can bring an enormous amount of value. What you assume to be areas of need, the employer might have a different perspective.
