Changing jobs and industries throughout your career is likely, but writing a resume that covers all of them can be challenging. I received a question from a reader who was struggling with how to market her background with multiple careers and thought it might be helpful to share if you are facing the same concern.

Q: I am getting ready to start looking for another position. My big dilemma lies in what area to focus on when to contact employers. When others look at my resume they comment on how many different jobs I have in my background. So far, I have three separate careers in different fields. Do I combine them all in one resume?
A: It is not uncommon for job candidates to have multiple careers but the key to implementing a successful job search begins with how you present your skills to the employer’s needs. A broad background in various industries gives you more depth in experience and skills. The danger zone with having three distinct and separate careers listed in one resume is that it might confuse the employer in what interests you. Your value that you bring to the employer can get lost in the number of industries.

One effective way to begin your search is to first determine what field of interest you want to pursue and then focus your efforts in making contacts in that area. Setting up informational interviews with those who are working in your field of interest can give you a current view of the latest trends and changes.

Targeting your resume to the industry might be another helpful technique rather than sending one resume that might seem generic with no focus. A good way to target your resume is making good use of a summary statement and utilizing key works that relate to the position you are seeking.

The key is generating interest from the employer by demonstrating you are competent in the industry you are seeking. Don’t make the mistake of listing job duties rather take the time to spell out what you did to help the company succeed and the results.

It is much easier for the employer to grasp your skill set that applies to the position instead of giving a “jack of all trades” perception. Think in terms of combing transferable skills, those skills that cross over industries.

Job candidates often have multiple resumes to use in their search to help the employer quickly identify the skill set and how their backgrounds relate to the position. Having multiple careers is an accomplishment rather than unplanned mayhem.

With each career move, think of the experience gained and how this makes you stand out from other candidates. Your multiple industry experiences give you a broader understanding of how business operates and demonstrates your adaptability to change.
