The interviews are over and what a great feeling knowing you have landed your first job! Making a lasting impact on your new boss and colleagues is now your focus because you only get one chance to make a great impression.

First impressions are critical because it sets the tone for how people will perceive you going forward. Here are some unspoken rules that will come in handy as you start your first job as the next few weeks will pave the road to good working relationships. Always remember that way you say and do matters during the coming months.

Here are five quick tips for making your first job successful.

1. Have a great attitude. Nothing is more important at this stage in your job. There are tons of things in life that you have no control of, but choosing to have a good attitude is entirely up to you.

Feeling the pressure of a new job is normal because you are absorbing a new routine, with structure and a boss. Yet keeping a good attitude in wanting to meet as many people and hit the ground running has an attractive quality about it that others will notice.

2. Keep your eyes and ears open. It pays to be more of an observer and listen to those around you. Watch how others respond and how your boss makes decisions; observe how work gets done.
Look out for non-verbal communications and how people around you react to last-minute changes. Studies indicated that approximately 93 percent of effective communication is non-verbal.

3. When you communicate, do so in a clear manner. Be aware of how you speak during meetings and when exchanging information with others. Even though you are new, the tone of your voice sends a perception.

Communicating through emails sends an impression as well, while the “less is more” communication style is acceptable, you still need to pay attention to the tone and content of your emails. Being concise and clear is a great skill to develop but conveying appreciation is never a lost cause. Good manners will always be remembered.

4. Be approachable when meeting colleagues. Even though you may find yourself being more comfortable with a few of them, you goal is to meet everyone. Being approachable means it might be up to you to make the first move and introduce yourself.

One of those unspoken rules will tell you that misery seeks out company and be careful not to fall into a trap of listening to negative gossip from people who would like a fresh audience.

5. Take time to learn the company culture. Even though you were hired for a specific reason with needed skills, it’s just as important to learn about the company culture and gain knowledge about what type of projects tend to take priority over others.

As you build working relationships and are getting familiar with the culture, start asking more detailed questions to those who have experience such as, “What do the most successful employees seem to have in common?”

Understand the company’s values and never take for granted what you think, your boss or the company values; instead observe and ask questions. Always keep observing what you see around you that confirms what the company believes. Company mission statements are helpful but don’t always lean on them, rather watch what others value, including your boss.
